Waiting…

Redwoods take a long time to become the giants they are – you might say they are waiting to “become.” As I contemplate that, I’m sitting here waiting for our truck to be serviced, at the dealership. The “getting here” portion of the morning was less than optimal (I ended up at the wrong dealership, at the other end of town), but I got here and the people were kind.

Have you ever noticed that people wait differently? One person is on their phone playing a game, one has a book, the gentleman in the tweed flat cap (very natty) is leafing through a magazine. I’m not great at waiting, so I have organized the work to be done for an event, ordered and eaten a delicious burrito that was delivered promptly and piping hot(thank you Golden Harvest Cafe and DoorDash), and planned out some of my week. Phew!

How do we wait on the Lord, though? Do you walk mindlessly through life, just waiting for “whatever will happen” to happen? Do you occupy your mind, learning what you can? Perhaps, like the man with the cool hat, you browse through what is around you, enjoying what is there before you. Maybe, like me, you plot and plan; trying to fit EVERYTHING in and often over-booking myself. Sometimes I think it’s an effort to not miss out on something, but maybe it’s more that if I don’t sit still in the quiet, then I don’t have time to just stop and think about things.

I’m more of a Martha than a Mary, always doing – always busy, not stopping and being still and really tuning in to the Holy Spirit. Are you a Mary, or a Martha?

Luke 10:38-42 tells us; “Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Today’s prayer:

Father, help me “choose that good part” which cannot be taken away from me, and to encourage others to do the same. I’ll be here, waiting.
